Brewing beer with shellfish might seem a little peculiar, but the first thing you need to know about Oyster Stouts is that they don’t actually taste like oysters!
Plus, the style isn’t some Johnny-come-lately flash in the pan — Modern Oyster Stouts date back to at least the 1920s, and folks keep coming back for another taste of their complex minerality.
And today’s version from Fonta Flora is a stellar example of the style. Brackish is even one of the top 40 Oyster Stouts on all of Untappd!
To make it, the brewers took their 6.4% ABV Stout base, added a sprinkle of sea salt, and steeped it on Virginia grown oysters!
The result is an incredibly complex yet extremely approachable sip. You’ll find swirls of chocolate and coffee roastiness spiraling through a body that’s blacker than the deepest seas. A whiff of minerality follows along with a touch of earthy richness, and it all ends with a lingering splash of mocha.
Oyster Stouts don’t show up on the app too often, and today you have a shot at a truly excellent one. But if you want to sail into the sunset with this sipper, you’ll have to be quick!
