The crew at Machine House are built different. When most of us see stinging nettles, we think “ouch” and steer clear. They, on the other hand, think “yum” and hand pick them for this brew.
And hot dang if that wasn’t the right call! Stinging Nettle Ale is even one of the Top 40 Herb and Spice Beers on BeerAdvocate!
To craft it, the Washington team started with a crisp Amber Ale brimming with malty character. Then they added fresh stinging nettles the brewers collected by hand on Vashon Island.
On the pour, biscuit and toffee aromas perfume the air with hints of wild grass. Notes of toasted pumpernickel and golden caramel course through the clean sip. The sweetness is beautifully balanced by distinct, thyme-like herbal tones from the nettles on a refreshing finish that begs another taste.
